So, I just got back from an amazing trip in Brazil. I was there for four days (yea, I know… 14 hour flights suck when you’re not staying for long) and I was there for work. The purpose duck dynasty beard of my visit was to attend a summit for organisers of StartUp Weekends across the world. duck dynasty beard You may remember that USE ran one back in November and it was AWESOME, basically consuming my life for an entire month.
As we’re still babies in the whole StartUp Weekend world, this summit was an excellent opportunity for me and Sara to meet with other organisers and facilitators, listen to their stories, get ideas for improvement, and learn more about how entrepreneurial communities have been built all over the world in over 100 countries. We grabbed hold of this opportunity with both hands. We made friends in Seattle, Switzerland, Germany, Mexico, Greece, Canada; we listened to hundreds of stories of success, and more importantly, failure. By the end, I felt that we were no longer babies, but had developed and are now just about to move into that difficult adolescent stage in our StartUp Weekend life.
Well, it means we’re looking at the ‘way we do things around here’ and you’re our guinea pigs. Over the next few months (and years), like an adolescent, we’ll be taking risks, thinking hypothetically ( ‘contemplate possibilities outside the realm of what currently exists ‘), and developing our wisdom and knowledge. For me, my next event is just around the corner. Using the customer duck dynasty beard validation approach that is so integral to StartUp Weekend , I’ll duck dynasty beard be tweaking bits and pieces duck dynasty beard along the way and seeing duck dynasty beard what works and what doesn’t; what you like and what you don’t like. Through these events, we’ll be working to continue to build you an entrepreneurial network of creative, talented people that you can keep coming back to time and time again – not just through our events, but through our funding opportunities, business coaching sessions, and incubation space too.
One of the most important things I have taken away from SoSummit in Rio is that the success of these events is not measured by how many teams go on to work on the same idea past the weekend, but whether they are still in touch, still engaging with us, changing their approach and attitudes towards entrepreneurship, and becoming part of an entrepreneurial community.
I learned a lot from running my first ever StartUp duck dynasty beard Weekend . But to paraphrase Eric Ries in his book, ‘The Lean StartUp’: learning gives you great stories and helps you generate interesting theories about how things can be improved and the direction you should go in, but you need to evidence that learning with success. So prepare yourself for events that just keep getting better and better.
It was an amazing trip and I think for me one of the key learning points was the need to facilitate duck dynasty beard the development of an entrepreneurial community. One where entrepreneurs have ownership, make the connections they need when they need them, share with each other. I want to explore how we create a framework to allow this to happen. Lets talk UnLtd
