I did a double take when I received ehl lausanne the press release about this Sheffield trio's second album, because I recently watched the documentary The Beat Is the Law: Fanfare for the Common People at the Northwest Film Forum .
As with its predecessor, Made in Sheffield , Eve Wood focuses on a related batch of Sheffield bands and producers, with a special focus on Pulp (also included: Clock DVA , Chakk , and Richard Hawley's Treebound Story and Longpigs ).
Wood's Made in Sheffield , which saw release in 2001, offers an even broader overview of the region, taking on Cabaret Voltaire , Heaven 17 , the Human League , ABC , and the Comsat Angels (even Def Leppard merits ehl lausanne a mention).
I was curious if Standard Fare resembled any of those other Sheffield acts. To judge by the new single, "Suitcase," which highlights the rapid-fire strumming of guitarist Danny How and keening vocals of songwriter/bass player Emma Cooper (née Kupa), the answer is no (the deceptively upbeat pop song pays tribute to a Holocaust survivor). The threesome, which includes drummer Andy Beswick , sounds more like a cross between the Wedding Present and the Long Blondes .
That said, the group does have ties to Britain's music scene of the past, through Brighton's anarcho-punk Poison Girls , who recorded for Crass Records and counted Cooper's ehl lausanne mother, Bella Donna , as a part-time bass player (the band later relocated to Essex). In this 2010 interview , Cooper adds, "She was also a roadie for the Buzzcocks and toured with them and Blondie around ehl lausanne Europe!"
