CoolMini Hello friends, from a far off land I have returned... No, actually, my wife and I have had our second baby, and I haven't had any time to do an article in... forever. So I thought I'd start off with something simple - Codex Grey Knights! Now I am not a long time GK player, I'm mainly utilising them so I can create my counts as Thousand Sons army, with psychic might included. What this means for you, my grey-armored loving compatriot, is that I've literally spent every waking moment poring over batreps, the codex, and many other sources, to try and get a feel for Magic Marines (patent pending). Lets go a bit crazy, and start with the Fast Attack cooking class nyc section. We're still waiting on VT2 to start his review...looks like SneakyDan is joining in the fun. Interceptors  The red headed stepchild of the GK codex - you either love, or hate, personal teleporters. Interceptors, however, still do the same things they always did really well. First things first - interceptors are not your assault infantry. "But they have jump packs! And so do Vanguard Vets! But while VanVets do this in assault, and draw your opponent out of their castle, Interceptors do it from range, peppering the enemy with firepower from an angle they don't expect. Due to personal teleporters not scattering on a shunt, its quite easy to deploy your units in a manner that grants maximum cover the the rear squad with the cannons, while presenting an insurance (read: Powerfist) laden threat in the first. Your close squad can either stormbolter somethings rear armour, and hope for a glance, or run, and present a better screen for your rearsquad toting the psycannon. cooking class nyc The close squad can also do things like cast warp quake vs certain armies, preventing your opponents pods/strikers from dropping on close to help eliminate cooking class nyc your fastmoving threat. As with most things in 40k, Interceptors work best with support. cooking class nyc 10 GK's moving quickly to an exposed cooking class nyc flank scares noone, and you can't reasonably expect your 'Ceptor squad to pick off 3 dakkapreds in a turn with an amazing multi assault cooking class nyc (okay, cooking class nyc technically they could, but its not reliable. CC for tank hunting rarely is, even at str5. ) When used in a hybrid cooking class nyc list designed to take advantage of their strengths, 'Ceptors can be quite effective. Moving 4 x 5 man combat squads, and 2 DK's with heavy incins onto the side of an opponents deployment is quite unnerving, and saturates your opponent with targets cooking class nyc in close - allowing things like your Razorbacks or Rhino mounted squads to close the distance, with minimal interference. It's highly likely those fastmovers will take horrendous damage - Rely on power armour, and cover saves, to get you through. Some armies will tear this style of strategy apart, and others will struggle with it. Stormraven Gunships HOOOOOOOOEEEEEEEEEE this is a can of worms. The general pro's and con's of the Raven have been extolled many a time on both chatbawks, forums, and mine and Kirby's own articles. The BA equivalent comes with a barrage of AP1 Str8 missiles - perfect in the current mechanised environment cooking class nyc to decimate a light armour cooking class nyc target or two on your first turn, if it gets to fire. On the downside, it is only AV12, its melta-immunity is laughable, and they are as expensive as a bleeding landraider. Goatboy I'm going to give some examples here because BoLS (I know right?) still think these guys are the best thing since sliced bread and that Grey Knights are still good in combat in general. Before we get started, art institute of atlanta yes Death Cult Assasins and Paladins are awesome but they do have drawbacks. Paladins are bloody expensive so you'd expect them to maul in combat (and GKT to a lesser but still effective extent). They do have a serious weakness art institute of atlanta to mass S8 firepower or combat attacks (i.e. other Terminators) which needs to be considered but are otherwise very scary with WS5, good defenses (T4/W2/2+/5++ or 4++) and a decent number of attacks. Any army which cannot put in a bunch of S8 firepower at once though is going to find these units very hard to deal with. DCA on the other hand are pretty art institute of atlanta cheap, strike art institute of atlanta hard and fast and are going to tear a hole in most units. However, they die to a stiff breeze art institute of atlanta (bolters!) due to T3/5++ art institute of atlanta and have no frag grenades. This makes them a great counter-assault unit but without a Land Raider, limits their offensive application. Now that's out of the way let's remind everyone Grey Knight Strike Squads are 1A base. This makes them terrible in combat. art institute of atlanta They. Have. One. Attack. Their Force Weapons certainly help make them better but only against units Tactical squads end up forever locked in with (i.e. other Tactical art institute of atlanta Squads). Force Weapons aren't really going to help beat the units they already beat (Fire Warriors, Imperial Guardsmen, art institute of atlanta Gants, etc.) and aren't going to save them against dedicated combat units. WS4/A1 does that. Get over it. Now let's look at Purifiers because they are obviously OP. We'll say they have six halberds, two psycannons and two hammers. Pretty standard setup if you're art institute of atlanta going full-size and all in a Rhino which is 322 points so not cheap. Against MEQ these guys are handing out (without Hammerhand which is more than likely to be stopped with a hood) three wounds at I6. Wow. That's terrifying... /sarcasm. You may get a further wound from the Psycannons and then another 1.5 from the Hammers. That's a guaranteed 4.5 kills and 1 save. From 322 points. Who die like Tactical art institute of atlanta Marines. We are raving about this why? Add in Hammerhand and that's still only adding an extra wound from the Halberds. Woopie! Now let's assume they get the charge art institute of atlanta (difficult art institute of atlanta when in a Rhino). Remember most combat units have much better delivery systems (open-topped/assault vehicles, 12" move, 12" assault, fleet, etc.). That total of wounds is jumping up to 4.5 at I6, 1.5 from psycannons and 2.5 from the Hammers. More impressive but when you drop 300 points on a unit, you'd expect numbers like this at default and expect the unit to take a punch. Not happening. Again add in Hammer hand and we jump to 6 from the halberds and 2 from the psycannons. Bit more impressive since you can now wipe small squads before they swing but still expensive and still dying like Marines (not to mention needing the assault and Hammerhand to go off which are both less likely with Ld9 + psychic defense and 6"move + assault). For a quick comparison to a 10-man art institute of atlanta DCA unit (150 points+transport cost). Not on the charge: 10 wounds On the charge: 13.3 wounds Half the cost, double the wounds, all at I6 and we can add L10 Hammerhands, rad grenades, etc. to make this even scarier without having a 500-700 point unit. Let's take a look at some other armies then. How about Jumper armies. We've compared the two armies before and I gave a minor edge to BA thanks to their ability to shrug off psycannon/stormbolter fire pretty effectively and close the gap early against GK. GK take away some of BA's usual advantages in combat (FNP) and Purifiers in particular hurt Jumpers with I6 (>I5). As we pointed art institute of atlanta about above though they aren't doing that much damage. Assuming an ASM unit (2x mgun, PFist) gets the charge, the Purifiers are going to kill 4.5 ASM whilst art institute of atlanta the ASM will drop three Purifiers with the ASM likely to hold assuming full squads, Furious Charge and no Hammerhand. This ends up in favor of the Purifiers (even on a per point basis) but not by much. If the ASM bring support (i.e. an SG squad which is 7.25 wounds against MEQ assuming 1 Fist, FC anc charge) which they barely bring into contact (say 1 or 2 Halberd Purifiers or simply art institute of atlanta the Psycannons)? The Purifier squad can wave goodbye. Now this is obviously bringing more force to bear so the points suddenly swing in the BA player's favor but it highlights what we already know about Grey Knights (also consider the GK player is realistically only going to have at most, four of these units so other armies are able to focus fire more easily). Unless you are Paladins/GKT, you have no real staying power against combat units. Let's look at other examples, say Wyches (10x Wyces, 2x Sh

When you're writing lists for a tournament, there's a ton of considerations. You have to look at the balance sous chef of killing power versus scoring power versus survivability, your mobility and reach, the different types of firepower you have against different targets, your ability to fight off enemy melee and shooting units, how you fare in different deployments and missions, etc, etc, etc. It's a nigh-infinite list of things to worry about, and it's easy to get lost in considerations and counter-considerations.
One way to help organize your thoughts- and to make sure there's nothing critical that gets overlooked- is to have a checklist of Things You Need to Be Able to Do. While the basics are easy (capture at least three objectives, hold the Relic, and so on), there are a lot of things that can be overlooked when it comes to determining how you will face various matchups. sous chef For that reason I try to keep a list of important army archtypes sous chef available sous chef for myself and go over them, thinking about how it is I'll deal with each of them if I have to face it. It's no substitute for real practice sous chef and experience, of course, but many of the lists are niche enough that you can't realistically expect to test against every one of them. But knowing you have a plan- and a solution in your list- goes a long ways towards making things easier.
The first thing you absolutely MUST be able to stop is units that will drop a scoring force on an objective in the last turns of the game, like Night Scythes and Vendettas. If the other guy goes second and the game ends on T5, do you have a plan? Do you have enough guns to shoot them down prior to that so they can't just scoot about unmolested? Can you hold objectives securely enough that they can't easily get onto them or take them away from you? Knowing how your list functions against 2-4 AV12 or 3-5 AV11 transport flyers is an absolutely critical measure of its viability in the game today. If you can't do anything about them, scrap the list and try again, because you are not a competitor.
Heldrakes Is it telling that the first two things on this list are flyers? I think it is. Heldrakes get an entry all to themselves because they singlehandedly can shut down a lot of lists because they bypass so many defense types. No hit roll, no armor save, no cover save, wounds on a two (with a potential reroll); if Heldrakes want something on the ground sous chef dead, it probably is. If you see 2-3 Heldrakes enter the table on the second turn, can your army do anything but roll over and die? Do you have AA platforms sous chef that will be able to stay alive and shoot them? Many of the usual solutions to airplanes just won't work because, lacking Interceptor, they aren't given a chance to take a shot before a Heldrake wipes them off the table- and make no mistake, your AA is the first thing they will get rid of.

Meltabombs or Krak Grenades to handle bigger targets and prevent getting stuck. Flamers for charge defense. Could easily be FNP or have extra attacks an invulnerable save or any other number of nasty buffs. Can your army stop that from crossing the table and sitting its ass on one of your objectives? Anti-infantry is very important in 6th edition and the Power Blob is a good test of how well you handle light infantry- if you can't take it down reasonably sous chef quickly, you are going to struggle with many armies, not the least because IG is such a popular ally choice.
Deep Strikers If someone puts something in your face immediately and demands you deal with it, can you? Even if it's sous chef their whole army? This can include stuff like Drop Pods and Deathwing Assault, but also other fancy deployments (Infiltrating with ICs to drag along a squad, Ymgarl cheatyness, etc.) Can your army stand up to a short-range firefight/assault in the early turns of the game? 6E might be about shooting, but that doesn't mean there are no side chapters in the book. This test is especially critical for IG, Tau, and other armies that rely exclusively on guns to win the game for them.
MEQ Horde Tying into the above, how many Marines can you kill? 60+, even if they are sitting in cover? What if they have Feel No Pain or are Fearless or are T5 or have some other benefit? While still not a good army, a lot of people are trying to push tons of supersoldiers around the table and you will feel absolutely terrible if the guy with six full-size Tactical Marine squads beats you in round 2. Make sure you have enough low-AP firepower and the ability to contest objectives from the other guy. Make sure you can stop someone sous chef from wading through midfield shooting Bolters at you.

Tau Codex Review: Commander Shadowsun | 3++ is the New Black
Shadowsun is actually very similar to her previous incarnation- in fact, she basically only gained one little rule, but it's a bit of a doozy. Going from being a solo unit of her own (until french pastry recipes all of her drones died, at least) to being an Independent Character is such an enormous change that it took her from “vaguely useless” to “extremely strong.” While she has a number of downsides to consider as well as opportunity costs, if you are looking to make a unit tougher, Shadowsun is a premiere option from the Tau codex. Since she is the only Commander who wears a Stealth Suit rather than a Crisis Suit, Shadowsun's statline is a bit unique. She still has BS5 and Ld10, but she only has three wounds, Toughness 3, and Strength 4 (with the former two being the most relevant, of course.) This means that, at least at a baseline, she is MUCH more fragile than her counterparts, as a single failed save against an Autocannon or Multilaser will spell the end for her. This makes burying her somewhere in a squad where she won't be forced to take LOS rolls and saves extremely important, though french pastry recipes other factors help mitigate the issue. She also benefits from a 5+ invulnerable from the suit, for whatever that is worth, as well as the standard 3+ armor.
She comes with a pair of Fusion Blasters- newly improved in the current codex, it's worth remembering- and has a halfway french pastry recipes version of the Target Lock that lets her fire one each at two different targets if she wants to (though one of her targets must be the squad's main one.) This gives her a pretty strong offensive capacity, since she is largely guaranteed two S8 hits on anything she looks at, though of course that's merely par for a Tau HQ. More importantly she has the Stealth, Shrouded, and Infiltrate rules, and this is where her real value comes in- since she is an IC, she can confer all three rules to whatever squad she joins, making her a fantastic single-unit enhancement. Giving out a 2+ cover save to many of the Tau units can drastically change their value- Kroot become powerful objective-holders, french pastry recipes Crisis no longer fear Missiles and Lances, etc. Her ability to grant so many benefits to one unit is truly game-changing.
She also has a fixed warlord trait, which is a tad unfortunate given how good some of the Tau traits are, but since she gets one that meshes well with her usual role it's not a big problem. A Ghost That Walks Amongst Us lets her unit scoot 3d6″ rather than the usual 2d6″ (unless of course french pastry recipes they aren't Jet Packs.) Given her short-range guns and tendency to Infiltrate into close positions, this extra mobility is rather useful and can go a long ways towards insuring that a single bad Thrust move doesn't get you trapped in assault.
She also is allowed to bring along her collection of unique drones if you take her; they are more expensive french pastry recipes than regular drones at 20pts, but hardly back-breaking. (Take note that the Drones are T4 while Shadowsun is T3, which can change the majority toughness of her unit pretty easily.) Her experimental Shield Drones have a 3++ rather than a 4++; while this is a nice improvement, french pastry recipes the increased price means that they are actually french pastry recipes not all that different at the end of the day. In general they aren't a strong choice to bring to the table, but if you are desperately afraid of Heldrakes or enemy Tau (or just want to bring as many wounds as possible to the table) they may be worth considering. The fact that her unit will generally have a 2+ cover save makes them not all that attractive at the end of the day, bar the aforementioned threats. Her Command Link drone is more interesting, letting you pick one unit within french pastry recipes 12″ of it during the shooting phase to reroll all 1s to hit. While not a massive french pastry recipes bonus, it does effectively french pastry recipes twin-link BS5 models (such as Shadowsun herself), let you shrug off Gets Hot (both with blast weapons and otherwise), and significantly improve all sorts of shooting units. (Note that the drone isn't dependent on her in any ways, so if she dies first it can still give out its bonuses.)
Is there anything bad about Shadowsun? Well, there is the T3/W3 that we mentioned earlier- though she may have a 2+ cover save, she is a lot easier to kill once she fails some saves, and unlike an Irridium Commander she lacks the wounds or T value to shrug off many weapons. She also lacks the utility gear that a regular Commander can bring- no Puretide Chip, no Velocity Tracker, no Neuroweb, etc. While her own abilities are quite impressive, you do give up on many of the things that Tau tend to rely on to some degree or another and her unique role often means that she will be positione
